Atlassian On-Premise & Data Center Products

This documentation explains how to set up a secure connection between the Cloud-native SQAI Suite and your self-hosted Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket Server/Data Center) using the Atlassian Application Tunnel.

Introduction: Atlassian Application Tunnel in SQAI Suite

SQAI Suite is a Cloud-native platform, and our direct, out-of-the-box integrations currently support Atlassian Cloud products (Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, Bitbucket Cloud). For customers running Jira Server, Data Center, or On-Premise instances, integration requires the use of the Atlassian Application Tunnel.

Diagram showing how application tunnels connect your Atlassian cloud and self-managed products.

1. How the Application Tunnel Enables Integration

The Atlassian Application Tunnel acts as a secure intermediary layer, allowing a private, self-hosted Atlassian instance to securely expose specific API endpoints to approved external cloud applications, such as SQAI Suite, without exposing the entire network.

  • Secure Access: The tunnel securely bridges the gap between your local network environment and the SQAI Suite Cloud application.

  • Bypasses Firewalls: It eliminates the need for complex firewall rules, VPNs, or exposing sensitive fixed IP addresses.

SQAI Suite Integrations Supported via Tunnel:

  • Atlassian Jira (Server/Data Center): For reading and writing issues/requirements.

  • Atlassian Confluence (Server/Data Center): For reading documentation context.

  • Atlassian Bitbucket (Server/Data Center): For reading code context and pushing automation scripts.

2. Setup Requirements and Steps

The configuration requires installation and management within your Atlassian environment by an administrator.

Step 1: Install and Configure the Application Tunnel

Your Atlassian Administrator must install and configure the Application Tunnel app within your specific instance (Jira Server/Data Center, etc.).

Step 2: Retrieve the Tunnel URL

Once the tunnel is configured and running, it will generate a secure, external URL endpoint. This URL is the address SQAI Suite will use to communicate with your instance.

Step 3: Connect in SQAI Suite

Instead of entering your internal Jira/Confluence URL, you will enter the Tunnel URL into the respective integration settings page within the SQAI Suite application.

  • You will still need to provide a Personal Access Token (PAT) or equivalent API key generated within your Atlassian instance, ensuring it has the necessary scopes (Read & Write for Work Items, Read for Pages, etc.).

3. Important Disclaimers and Dependencies

Before proceeding with this integration, please note the following factors that influence setup feasibility:

3.1 Connectivity Limitations (One Organization Per Instance)

You must be aware of the 1:1 linking restriction enforced by the Atlassian Application Tunnel:

  • You can link only one Atlassian Cloud organization to a single Data Center instance.

  • A single Atlassian Cloud Organization typically houses multiple cloud apps (Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, Bitbucket Cloud). Your Data Center product (e.g., Confluence Data Center) can only receive one tunnel connection.

  • Result: Linking multiple separate Cloud Organizations (each with its own tunnel) to the same single Data Center product is not supported.

    • If you require this functionality, please refer to the Atlassian Feature Request for updates.

3.2 Feature Availability Differences

When integrating Cloud apps (like SQAI Suite) with self-managed Data Center instances, there will be some differences in feature availability compared to native Cloud-to-Cloud integrations.

3.3 Version and Admin Dependencies

  • Version Dependency: The feasibility and stability of the integration depend on the specific version of your self-hosted Atlassian stack (Jira Server, Confluence Data Center, etc.). Outdated or heavily customized versions may require additional configuration or might not be compatible.

  • Internal Admin Rules: Setup is subject to any internal policies, security restrictions, or application control rules managed by your Atlassian Administrator. SQAI Suite cannot circumvent these internal security measures.

  • Support: SQAI Suite provides support for the integration interface within our platform; however, technical support for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Atlassian Application Tunnel itself must be directed to Atlassian or your internal administration team.

Get Started: To begin the setup process, please consult the Atlassian documentation: Configure application tunnels.
